The Gibôr Within
Scripture: Judges 6:12, 1 Samuel 16:18
Devotional:
The Hebrew word gibôr shows up throughout Scripture, and it is never used for a bystander. It describes a man of valor, someone who shows up, who engages what is in front of him rather than avoiding it, who understands that his household, his community, and his calling require someone willing to stand and not step back.
What is striking is who God calls a gibôr before the person has done anything to earn the title. Gideon is hiding in a winepress, threshing wheat in secret because he is afraid, and the angel of the Lord greets him as 'mighty warrior.' God was not describing who Gideon currently appeared to be. He was calling out who Gideon was created to be and inviting him to grow into it.
That is good news if you feel more like the Gideon in the winepress than the warrior on the battlefield today. The identity of gibôr was never meant to be self-generated through confidence or performance. It is spoken over you by God, and then walked out through obedience, one act of courage at a time. You do not have to feel ready. You have to be willing.
Reflection:
Where do you feel more like Gideon hiding in the winepress than a warrior standing in the open?
What would it look like to take one step of obedience this week, whether or not you feel ready?
