Holy Week

Holy Monday: The Temple and the Tree

Scripture: (Matthew 21:12–22, Mark 11:12-19, Luke 19:45-48)  Isaiah 56:6-7

Historical Happenings:
On this day of Holy Week, Jesus enters the temple and overturns the tables of the money changers. What was meant to be a sacred place of prayer had become cluttered with distraction and corruption. His actions weren’t just about anger, they were about cleansing. Jesus was reclaiming space for true worship.

Not to be overshadowed by the cleansing of the temple was the cursing of the fig tree. On the way to the temple Jesus cursed a fig tree for not bearing fruit, out of season mind you. Then, the next morning on the way to the temple, they recognized that the tree which Jesus had cursed, had withered and died. This lesson was about the power of prayer AND faith.

Though these two events have different personalities, they carry very deeply aligned spiritual meanings.

Devotional Thought:
Today pause long enough to look at the temple and the tree. A tree withered from the power of prayer. The temple was cleansed because the lack of prayer. We, you and I, are the temple of God! Jesus was teaching His disciples, now us, the power of prayer lies within the purity of the temple.

It’s easy for our lives to become crowded with jobs, ambitions, habits, or even good things that slowly take God’s rightful place. Holy Monday invites us to pause and ask: What has crowded my life from being a temple of prayer? Jesus doesn’t cleanse to condemn, but to renew and make room for deeper intimacy with Him. Prayer IS your faith connection! Prayer is intimacy with God.

Prayer:
“Lord, search my heart and show me anything that doesn’t honor You. Give me courage to let go of what doesn’t belong, and create in me a clean heart. Restore in me an urgency of prayer and increase my faith”
