The Preparation
Scripture: Hebrews 12:1-2, Isaiah 40:31
Devotional:
No runner steps onto the track in street clothes. No marathoner carries a backpack for twenty-six miles. So why do we keep trying to run our race loaded down?
The writer of Hebrews doesn't start with endurance. He starts with weight. And notice, he doesn't only say "sin." He says hindrances. Things that aren't wicked, just heavy. Grudges you've carried so long they feel normal. Comparison that quietly drains your joy. Fear dressed up as caution. Busyness that isn't sinful but still steals your strength. You can be a good person and still be an overloaded one.
Here's the part we need to hear: laying something down is not the same as losing something. It doesn't feel like sacrifice, it feels like relief. Think about what it's like to finally set down a heavy bag you've carried far. Your shoulders drop. Your breathing changes. Nothing about you was made weaker by putting it down, you were made free. That's what stripping off the weight is. It's not God asking you to have less of a life. It's God asking you to have less of what was never life-giving in the first place.
And this is where grace steps in, because most of us think preparation means we have to clean ourselves up before we come to God; get the grudge sorted, get the fear conquered, get it together, then approach the starting line. But Hebrews doesn't say strip it off alone. It says strip it off “while looking to Jesus” (v.2). You don't lay the weight down by sheer willpower. You lay it down in His presence. He's not standing at the finish line waiting to see if you make it, He's beside you at the starting line, helping you take off what was never meant to finish the race with you.
So preparation isn't hustle. It isn't waking up earlier or trying harder. It's tying yourself to God before you tie your shoes. It's laying something down before you pick anything up.
You don't get ready for the race by adding more. You get ready by subtracting. Preparation isn't about more, it's about less. And whatever you set down today, you were never meant to finish carrying anyway.
Reflection: What's one thing you're carrying that isn't sin, just weight? What would it look like to lay something down with God today, instead of trying to continue to carry it alone?
